This isn’t actually a pet hate of mine, but it’s certainly irritating. So I’m starting a 4 part mini-series.

When it comes to being easily offended, it seems like more and more people these days are fitting into that category. But why the heck do they?

It seems like every day there’s someone else who’s easily offended by something seemingly not offensive. When I was growing up, you couldn’t even offend someone by calling them a horrible name right to their face. Which I may have done once or twice. ? But today, people are offended by the clothes you choose to wear – what the hell has it got to do with them!

There are obviously all sorts of reasons people get so easily offended about trivial nonsense these days and this can be extremely difficult to deal with when you’re faced with it day after day. But luckily, there are ways you can deal with it if you first understand why people are like this. Which for someone like me is also extremely difficult.

Being offended isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

There’s a lot of room for education and growth in an individual when people are offended about something they said. Sometimes, people don’t realise that what they’re saying can actually be taken offensively. Maybe because to them it isn’t.

When that happens, those who are offended are actually providing an individual with a learning opportunity. The issue arises when people are getting easily offended by things that they shouldn’t be. This can not only teach people things that are wrong, but it can also stop them from expressing their opinion because they become fearful of the backlash. Not something I suffer with.

Why is everyone so damn easily offended nowadays?

Why is Everyone So Easily Offended These Days? (part 1)We just can’t argue the fact that people are far more easily offended now than they ever have been. With so many people having access to argue – through social media mostly – anyone with an opposing opinion is speaking up claiming to be emotionally traumatised by something insignificant. I call people who argue on facebook keyboard warriors. Personally, I don’t put on social media anything I wouldn’t say to someone’s face. I’ve also seen people back peddle like f**k to my face after they’ve had a pop on social media.

But how come? What has changed in our society that has people throwing a fit at the smallest thing? These I think are some of the characteristics of people who are easily offended and unfortunately, these traits are on the rise.

Part 2 coming soon. 🙂

  1. Hello Tony,

It does seem that people can go off on the silliest things. There is such a sensitivity these days, it’s hard to have a conversation or build a relationship for fear you might offend someone.

Life is way too short to be concerned with the small stuff. In the big picture of life everything is small stuff.

    Thanks,

    David
